Oak

by Obscure   Feb 25, 2020

The darkness shivers with rain
And light splits the sky in two
Revealing an oak by the lane
That aged long before me or you

Wood once as tough as diamond
Forlorn the sentry now groans
Stranded, neglected, shunned
All that is left is his bones

And all you can hear in the silence
Is his soft whispering sigh
"I wish but to join my loved ones,
Let this be my final goodbye"

The bolts that unveiled his grief
Come slicing back through the rain
And though their fire is brief
A splintering scar remains

A sorrowful yet touching tale of this oak! The rhyming was lovely and helped each very along... and the overall feel of this poem reminded a lot of "The Giving Tree", if you remember or have read that book.

There's a tenderness and a beauty in each verse. Well done!
