Branches of you

by Rachael Gadomski   Jun 24, 2020

There was once a tree, lack of luster and dying leaves. There was a man, heart of anger and axe in hand. He went in the forest to relieve his pain and spotted a tree that was one in the same. He buried his weapon in soft-soiled ground and began to circle the earth in which it was bound. After moments of thinking and questioning himself, he picked up his axe in attempts to help. He dug up the dirt careful and slow to reach the roots that no longer let the tree grow. In a matter of time he finished his quest and began digging up the roots that lay quiet at rest. The tree was in pain and wanted to scream but the silence was learned from the lack of dreams. It looked away into a better place and when it awoke from the trance, saw that man’s face. It was placed in a small patch of sun, no longer in the world it came from. Its roots were buried deep in the dirt, and it realized that the branches no longer hurt. The leaves were filled with color and it was breathing on its own. The angry man with the axe had given it a home. The home was broken down and riddled with holes but there was a whisper in the wind that filled it with soul. I’m breathing you in, breathing on my own. You made room in your heart to give me a home.

Welcome to P&Q! I found this piece quite simple but really captivating. It builds up towards the final two lines, which tie together with the title very nicely!

Hope to see more writing from you. :)
