Birds Of Arua

by Aiko (Dreamsurfer)   Aug 27, 2020

I cannot fly,
But watching birds feels superhigh.
From tiny all-red birds and grey-blue ones,
To brown eagles with white beaks.
Are they from Albania?
Maybe they are just local kites,
But some pigeons migrated to Arua,
With tags from Israel.
They sing a song locally transcribed in Lugbara as:
Mi iji katro ngungu,
Just bring even if it smells!
I fancy the black and white design
On African Pied Wagtails.
GOD is artistic!
Yellow weaverbirds sizzle with their music.
I have spotted owls and vultures on trees,
Storks also hang around.
Guineafowls are kept by the Lugbara,
But seem like wild birds.
Crested cranes are present too in some parts of Arua,
Though elusive.
The most celebrated birds are the black and white crows,
Also known as gaagaa,
Because of the sound they make.
Can't leave out the domesticated chicken, duck and turkey;
The Lugbara eat birds.
Some hunt using catapults and stones,
While others set ground traps.
