Loss

by Skyfire   Sep 19, 2020

Somehow
in the silence
and the still
my heart races
my breath runs
and I can't catch either.

I turn the water up
to burn
and force myself
under
because I need it
to cauterize
my wounds.

From the moment
you left
I felt a howl inside of me
one that never
leaves, only quiets -
and sometimes
it's so loud
it shakes my teeth.

I am disoriented.

My tongue swells up
and a soft keening
is all the noise
I can make.

Congratulations on this well-deserved win! Absolutely beautiful! Poignant and so touching. I love the below lines:

    From the moment
    you left
I felt a howl inside of me
    one that never
    leaves, only quiets -
    and sometimes
    it's so loud
    it shakes my teeth.

    AND

    My tongue swells up
    and a soft keening
    is all the noise
    I can make.

This perfectly encapsulates the chaos that can surround a broken heart and the leaving of someone we care so much about.
