Discovery

I think somewhere in all this
subcutaneous earth
I inadvertently buried you
and forgot - like winter -
that you needed
particles of light and warmth
to grow confidence.
Instead, I cut
at your roots
as if they were binding
and abandoned you to frost
letting myself believe
that the price
was not too high
for freedom.
