Rage Against The Machine

by Brandon Evans   Jul 14, 2004

Culture embracing its insolence
Driven by an unseen face
It feeds off the minds of the weak
Condemning the “individual” race

We worship our electric messiah
As if it wrote standards of life
“Oh, great spokesman”, we beg.
“Take away our will and our strife!”

For we are its latent children
A collection of ignorant fools
Relentlessly led by fads on a whim
Our masses are used as its tools

Caught up in the ever-changing moment
Our children have found their new God
Cost, but the small price of identity
Followers have no risk of being odd

Perhaps I stand alone
In a fight to reclaim my own self
Is it so wrong to want to be different?
Is it so wrong to preserve singular health?

We’ve all been victims of its allure
But like a channel, we sometimes need change
Living our lives the way others say we should
Doesn’t that seem a bit strange…?

This poem was written for an older crowd, but I think people of all ages could relate to it. It describes how TV and society have forced us to think and act a certain way, and how it caused the “death of the individual”.
