Stepping Stones

by Walter   Apr 21, 2023

He started off low
But his ambitions were high
Becoming determined
To reach for the sky

His parents were poor
But their love was so grand
And always were willing
To lend him a hand

They provided his dinner
A hot home cooked meal
He never would starve
And true love he'd feel

Though later in school
His friends used to tease
Made fun of his clothes
So he felt unease

When he would go home
He no longer would grin
And questioned his mother
As he walked in

So why are we poor
Unlike all my friends
With you and dad working
Why can't we spend!

My friends all tease me
While dressed in brand tags
Compared to their looks
I'm wearing old rags!

His mum became sad
And tried to advise
She told him the truth
Thought this would be wise

I know we're not rich
But we're trying our best
We cannot afford
To have you well dressed

Your poor father works late
And climbs endless hills
To try and make ends meet
So we can pay bills

But this explanation
He could not accept
His mind was strong willed
And forwards he leapt

He found part time work
Which became stepping stones
Working hard for promotions
Ignoring his moans

Now finally successful
He became his own boss
While making grand profits
And never a loss

The years all passed quickly
Taking time to reflect
Though the life that he's lived
Is far from perfect

Successful with business
No one can deny
His pockets are all filled
But his heart is bone dry

Now understanding
What his mum tried to say
From when they last talked
He remembers that day

When he walked out
Because of his greed
Only realising now
He had all that he needs

Because love is more rich
Then what money could own
His parents have now passed
From his heart of stone

He was never more happy
With finances poor
His heart once felt rich
When love would adore

And now he would trade
To have it all back
How content he once felt
To how he now lacks

Because wealth should be measured
By not what you spend
But what you hold in your heart
And keep till the end

Such a great flow in this piece, and a strong message! The ending really hits the nail on the head. Well done!
