Oh the winds they rage and rancour
and the sky is cold and gray
The lights of home are calling
A thousand miles away
So I’m boarding now in silence
heart as heavy as can be
Flying home for Christmas
Over the waves of the winter sea
I can almost hear the ruckus
In the Bankers on Dame Lane
See the faces flushed with laughter
Naught but a memory left of pain
But the years have thinned our number
like the leaves on the autumn tree
I’ll drink a toast to absent friends
when I land over the winter sea
There was Gavin with the good craic
and Claire with the quickest smile
Gone before the dawn could break
Wish they could of waited just a while
Yet I do feel them in the quiet
when the clouds give way to gleam
Or is it just me being hopeful
Living in a memory of a dream
Oh the runway hums beneath me
but my thoughts are far ahead
Where my home waits like a beacon
Where I can rest my tired head
And though grief will sleep beside me
And hold me close and tight
There is love enough for sorrow
Room for both to stay the night
So I’ll lift my heart to hopeful
as the wheels kiss hallowed ground
To the friends who left too early
To the ones still here around
May the road rise up to meet us
May our hearts find harmony
As we gather home this December
Beyond the waves of the winter sea
