Picture Perfect

I came across your painting that's not as yet complete
And I was drawn to the detail that you'd show
Outlines in light pencil were scribed around the sheet
The backbone of your art would hide below

You told me inspiration first starts from within
Where artwork is something that you feel
And you would need a vision before you can begin
What brushstrokes and all colours would reveal

This painting feeling naked, but I would understand
The foundations that are needed are so clear
But the masterpiece created by your brush and hand
First needing a solid structure to adhere

I would never notice with all the work you do
Wondering why it took so long from start to frame
Just your finished painting is all that I would view
The hard work which lies beneath would not remain

Now I share your vision which I know is not just art
You're much more than just a picture to my eyes
Relationships are built with just a sketch when they start
Before they would reveal the final prize

And love is just the painting, the portrait which is you
It is built from all the layers that we hide
Where makeup is the coating which covers what is true
Before a single brushstroke was applied
