Hope

by Mishel   Jul 23, 2004

He has been crying again
I can tell
His innocent smile cannot hide the pain
His eyes are so swollen
And his body is bruised
His arms are scarred
Just like his pride
We walk together
Side by side
Silence all around us
We both know where to go and what to do
Without a word being said
We reach the door and I sit down
As he watches me
I look up at him as his smile returns
I'll be only a minute,' he says
He walks through the door as I look to the ground
Not even a minute later it begins
The shouting and screaming
The pounding of footsteps
The sound of breaking glass
And heavy things hitting the ground
I start to cry
The door opens and he steps out
A bloody nose and a black eye
'Not too bad,' he says trying to be funny
I look at him
And tears start to fall down his cheeks
So much pain in this young boys eyes
I stand up and pull him close to me
And hug him tight
He holds me in return
I wish I could just transfer the pain from his body to mind
'We better get going,' he says as he wipes his face
I nod and start to walk
I look at the sky
And watch as the sun goes down
It warms my face
And hope comes to my heart
One day he will be safe
We just have to be strong
I slide my hand into his as we continue to walk
We have no destination
But who cares
All I need to do is be here for him
He squeezes my hand
As he realizes the sunset
I'm sure he feels that there is hope
And one day he will be free
He will finally be free
