Standing in the Rain

by Timothy   Aug 5, 2004

She had agreed to meet him, out on the corner of 34th and Franklin,
He said he would be there, and they would go on a date;
As she waited, the sky opened up,
Drenched to the bone, she told herself he was just late.

An hour turned into two and she was frozen to the bone,
The rain was as relentless as a gale;
In her heart she knew the truth,
Her one true hope for love had failed.

Turning toe-to-heel, she did not know what to do,
Her Prince Charming had deserted her;
Left alone in the city, in the rain,
She waited for the worst to occur.

Then an old Buick pulled into view,
The driver was a plain-looking man, but with kind eyes;
Need a lift? he asked in a soft tone,
Yes, she answered with a deep sigh.

My name is Marty, he said as she sat down,
Maddie, she replied with a frown;
Marty did not ask why she had been standing in the rain,
He did not ask why she had been in this part of town.

Marty and Maddie made small talk, as he drove her to her house,
She laughed at his jokes, and talked about life awhile;
At her house, he shielded her from the rain,
At her door he smiled a gentle smile.

She thanked him for the ride, and gave him a quick hug,
As he turned to leave, they both raised their heads to the thunder;
Wait! she cried, and they stared at each other in the lightning flash,
Timidly, she asked, You want my number?

He smiled widely, and accepted graciously,
He got his car, and drove away, down on Main;
Maddie smiled, watching the Buick disappear,
It was amazing how much could happen...standing in the rain.

(Footnote: I realize the puncuation is not correct, but it wouldn't let me put quotation marks in unless i put it in slang!)
