Goodnight Sweetheart

by Megan Scaggs   Sep 6, 2004

We met back in high school, and somehow we both knew,
The love we were feeling was a love forever true.

He would call me on the phone, when each day was through,
And whisper goodnight sweetheart, don't forget I love you.

When we finished college, we married that next fall.
Of our days together, that was the greatest of all.

The American dream was ours for the taking,
From our white picket fence, to our all night love making.

But little did we know that God had other plans.
The life of my husband was in someone else's hands.

He called me that morning, as if he somehow knew,
He whispered goodnight sweetheart, don't forget I love you.

His building was on fire, a plane hit floors below.
His chances for survival were dangerously low.

I wept as I listened to every word he said,
Then I heard someone scream as the connection went dead.

I looked on in horror, when all those people died,
As the south tower crumbled with my husband inside.

I turned off the T.V. and just sat there in shock.
I don't know how long I cried, before I heard the knock.

I prayed that it was him, as I rushed to the door,
But there stood a woman, and I knew what this was for.

She said, my husband died. His body had been found.
If I needed to talk, she said she would be around.

It was one week later, our dream came to an end.
When I put in the ground, my husband and best friend.

As I closed the casket, I gently said adieu,
I whispered goodnight sweetheart, don't forget I love you.

And every now and then, when my road seemed too steep,
I'd see him in my dreams as I drifted off to sleep.

He'd say, be strong my love, as hard as that might be.
You must learn to live again, and go on without me.

He helped me through my pain, and the loneliness within.
He watched over me until I fell in love again.

Last night I cried once more, what he said broke my heart.
He told me Heaven called him, and he must now depart.

He kissed me one last time as he faded from view.
Then whispered goodnight sweetheart, don't forget I love you.
