Perfect

by candy   Oct 13, 2004

She was so beautiful, thin and fair
when she walked by men stopped to stare
perfect grades, lots of friends
volunteers, to the sick she tends
picks up garbage along the highway
on the debate team, she gets her say
at school shes the head of her class
plays basketball, gets every pass
men gawk at her and girls wish
that someday they'll look like this
she has more than just things you own
but nobody sees her when she gets home
walks in and shes thrown against the door
beaten and pummeled, cold on the floor
her dad comes home, again hes drunk
grabs her throws her on the bottom bunk
rips off her shirt, undoes her bra
beats her stomach until it is raw
rips off her pants and then underwear
frozen in fright, she can only stare
undoes his belt and pulls down his pants
trying to run away, nows her chance
she lunges for the door, he grabs her by the hair
lays her down and touches her there
when hes finished he hits her once more
starts walking out and calls her a wh***
she grabs a knife and runs outside
on the ocean shore she watches the tide
sinks the knife into her flesh
tries to breathe, but cant catch her breath
the next day at school they hear about her fight
paralyzed by that story and that it happened every night
how could someone so perfect go through so much
shiver in fear at a mans touch
be afraid to be alone
beaten and bloody when she gets home
on her arm was her life story
how her family didn't care and didn't say sorry
written with a knife preserved through scars
though she has no breath of her own, she consumes ours
