The First Christmas Day (Sonnet)

by Mark Spencer   Dec 11, 2004

There were no decorations to be found.
No gifts beneath the tree that Christmas morn.
Jolly old Saint Nick never came around,
On the day that our Lord Jesus was born.

No Christmas lights adorned the city streets.
No celebrations, when His life began.
Swaddled in rags, no stockings for his feet;
Humble beginnings for the Son of man.

Not a single Christmas carol was heard.
No sound of sleigh bells echoed from afar.
They came in silence, not speaking a word.
To see who lay beneath that shining star.

The Lord of Christmas does not drive a sleigh.
HE was the gift, on the first Christmas Day.
