Perfectly Drawn Mask

by Charlotte   Dec 27, 2004

In front of you stands a laughing and smiling girl so perfect
At first glance the happy exterior of this girl is deceiving
If you looked at her life you’d think she had everything
A nice house, a loving family, great friends and a good life
You wouldn’t give it a second thought that just maybe that smile was fake
And why would you think otherwise, I mean she obviously has everything, right?
But what you don’t realize is that it is all a game of make believe for her
Because people don’t see what is hidden behind that big smile of hers
Behind it lie hundreds of tears which take all her will power to not let flow
She must wait until the sun leaves and night falls before her tears can also fall
Because only in the safety of darkness does she let her emotions out to play
For the world can’t ever know that this girl isn’t at all what she seems to be
She isn’t strong or happy or confident but in fact a scared little girl
Her one wish in life isn’t to marry the man of her dreams and live in a nice house
Because in reality her one wish in life is to die and finally leave this world
But she knows that her wish will unfortunately never be granted
So instead she sits alone in her room late at night carving away at her arm
Letting her blood run is the only way she knows how to rid the pain
She then hops into her bed like she has done nothing wrong and cries silent tears
Holding her pillow over her face to muffle the cries she soon falls asleep
Into the world of dreams she enters to once again find her favourite dream
In this fantasy world this girl can finally be herself
It’s the one place she doesn’t have to pretend and can do what she likes
This particular dream she lives out every night is filled with such happiness
Whether she’s slitting her wrists, shooting herself or dangling from a tree
It always brings a smile to her face, it’s the only thing that does anymore
But in the morning she wakes up to realize that none of it was real
She truly thought that once again the night before had been her last
She wants to cry as she has fallen for the same evil trick again
But instead she must pull herself together so no one sees the misery inside
Reluctantly she glances in the mirror to be greeted by the familiar sight
Her makeup is smeared, tears stain her face, and blood is caked on her wrists
Washing it all off with a cloth she draws on her mask once again
Last nights fallen tears and lost blood are pushed to the back of her mind
Until she can be in the sanctuary of her room and perform her nightly task
Practicing her smile one last time before leaving to begin another day of make believe
If only people could look beyond her mask, look beyond her clothes
Then they would see her tears she hides and permanent scars she’s drawn
But they’ll never know because she hides it so well behind her perfectly drawn mask

I just had to say that I relate to this so much, it's incredible. Almost every line i understood completly, it's so strange how much I relate to this. But anyway, lovely I liked how you portrayed the girl's obsession with the thought of hurting herself as her comfort rather than her fear. The contradicting emotions you displayed detailed the object perfectly and really portrayed the suffering and turmoil hidden behind, as you compared it to, a mask. Good job
