I'm not the religious type

by No Motiv?   Jan 2, 2005

I went to church last Sunday
To get my donuts and coffee
Minding my own business
When the Lord appeared next to me...

(Now, I'm not the religious type;
I just come to church
For the food and people...
I never believed there was anything
Real important
Behind those pews and pointy steeple...)

Anyway, getting back to my story-
The Lord came to me that day
He looked me in the eyes
And here's what he had to say:

"My child, I love you dearly...
But sometimes you make me think"
When he paused to make sure I was listening;
My heart began to sink.

I interrupted him,
and soon began to confess,
"Lord, I am unworthy of this meeting;
Surely there is someone better to address.
For I have never come to church
To pray or talk to you,
I've only come because I was taught
it was the 'Christian' thing to do."

"Let me finish what I need to say"
As he held my weary hand,
"You are one of many
Who refuse to follow my footsteps in the sand."

I thought about all the times
I blamed God for my bad days,
And all the times I used his name
In selfish and demeaning ways.

"I created you, all your
beauty and all your flaws,
I've seen how you ignore me
And how you break my holy laws..."

"...When I made man,
I also created choice,
What kind of world would this be-
If you didn't have a voice?"

"It's okay to make mistakes,
But it's not okay to pretend I'm not here,
I am your true and holy Father,
All that you will know to be pure."

"I love you with all my heart, child...
And I've come to you today,
So you will spread my loving word...
So others hear what you will say..."

"I believed in you since you took
Your first breath of air,
I watched you grow up through your mother's eyes,
I've always been there..."

The Lord said nothing more,
And rose to fade away,
But before he disappeared,
I thanked him for that day.

The Lord is in the mountains,
The sky and the blue sea,
His love filling the whole world,
To guide us unconditionally.

Now I know that angels watch me,
Wherever I travel to,
Because whether you believe in Him or not,
The Lord believes in You.

I love the punchline. It was worth waiting for and the poem kept my interest. I do like shorter poems but this was good.

I'm speechless, wow....great poem! I mean it! I really loved it....I personally don't go to church, I don't think that I have to go to church to have faith. In so many ways church has become something that I don't want to be a part of anyway. The pastor molesting kids, people talking about eachother, who looks the best....yada yada yada Anyway again terrific poem!!
