A Pianist Through Age

As a baby, you stare in amazement
As your sister’s hands slide across the keys
Looking up occasionally to read her music
You are shocked, she has some type of appease

Before you know it, you crawl onto the bench
On the keys, you bang your delicate hands
It doesn’t sound pretty, you wonder why
Tears well in your eyes, you misunderstand

With lots of practice, you improve.
You can play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”
Your face lights up, you run to your mom
To celebrate, she buys you a little toy car

Your first recital, you were ten
Your mom even bought you a new dress!
“Chopsticks” was your choice of song
A new medal was won, it was a great success

Years go by, as a teen you improve very much
“Mozart”, and “Beethoven” fill your mind
You begin to add your own touch to these pieces
Their ideas and yours begin to intertwine

You try out for the all-state competition
Only for the best, the cream of the crop
You get first prize in the whole state!
You now practiced day and night, non-stop

After graduating high school, after many years
Thoughts of fame and fortune fill your head
You succeed Berklee College of Music
A professional pianist lies ahead

Those thoughts now become a reality
Your album is sold out everywhere
In every store, in every mall
Soon you become a multi-millionaire

Following in your footsteps were
Young children seeking advice
This is what you had told them
This is what you had devised

“Stick to your dreams, they will come true
It’s just in a matter of time, short or long
Always remember, practice makes perfect
And you will be right where you belong.”

After many years, factors of time came upon you
Your hands, worn from years of over movement
Years of hard work, dedication, and time
Are what these old hands represent

And still, these old hands still guide across the piano,
These black and white keys, just like they used to
