Home From Vacation

She sat alone in the dark
The little eight-year-old girl
Holding her teddy bear
Her blond locks in curls

She rocked back and forth
In the withered rocking chair
Looking out her window
She said this sweet prayer:

“Oh God, please help me!
On my arms and legs there are bruises
My daddy got really mad
And it’s me who he accuses.

He says I’m a very bad girl
But I don’t know what I’ve done
God, please help me figure this out
We used to have so much fun.

After mommy left on vacation
To Heaven, is what my dad said
He started to cry as he told me
While he tucked me into bed.

Mommy’s been on vacation
For a while, so it seems.
Now my daddy hits me
Even in my dreams.

God, can you ask mommy
When she is coming home from Heaven?
It’s been a while since she left,
It was back when I was seven.”

She sat alone in the dark
The little eight-year-old girl
Holding her teddy bear
Her blond locks in curls

She rocked back and forth
In the withered rocking chair
Looking out her window
Wishing her mother was there.
