Just a While

by Molly Elizabeth   Mar 10, 2005

You said that you'd be back for me,
I cried for you to stay
You said it's what you had to do
I couldn't help but look away.
You took your hands upon my face,
and tried to make me smile.
I couldn't stop the tears that fell
you'd be gone for quite a while.

You took your hands in mine
and gave me a kiss goodbye
you said you loved me with all of your heart, and nothing that happened could tear us apart.
You swore it wouldn't be long
until out life together would begin
I forced on a smile,
and prayed you weren't wrong...

Then you held me in your arms
until you had to let me go,
I kissed you on the cheek,
you promised to write...
though I couldn't speak.
You said I love you...
I whispered softly.. "I love you too."
and thats when I knew,
I'd seen the last of you.

I know you fought hard
for the country you loved,
I know deep down
I couldn't have made you stay,
but if you loved me as you said,
why'd this happen this way?

Weeks later since I got the call,
saying you weren't coming home
I finally got the letter
you promised you'd write.
It was so simple what your wrote
but finally this almost felt alright...

tears streamed down my face with each and every word...

"I'm sorry I left you,
I hate to see you cry
I hope you know I Love You,
so much that I would die.
I can't wait to see you
I always miss your smile.
We'll be together soon
don't worry,
It'll be just a while..."

This poem is so sad. Did you really go through this? I can't relate to a lover going overseas. But my cousin spent a year over there and my cousin-in-law is currently serving in Iraq right now. If you need to talk, i'm here. Keep writing, it's great.
