Cancer

For those whom cancer has taken
-----

Mother dries her eyes
As her child slowly speaks-
He is in pain with fever
As his blood pressure peaks

"Mommy, I love you,
Please don't leave me....
Hold my hand,
Even as I sleep...."

The mother nodded
As he drifted away
Into sleep he fell,
Dreaming of day...

The days he could run
And play in the park...
Didn't have to be home,
Or not until dark.

He could go to school
Read his books....
Even though the other kids stared
And gave him odd looks

He was bald and pale
As his leukemia held steady
By the time it prevailed,
No one was ready-
Ready for the ache,
That was felt in the heart
As mother and father
Watched their son fall apart

"Baby, I love you,
Don't let this cancer win...
God, Please save my son
From the Devil's Sin...."

The boy, he slept
For weeks on end
He lost his life,
His education, his friends

But no one forgot
The smile he wore
No matter how drained,
Tired, or sore

On his final day,
His mother was broken...
Before the boy died
His last words were spoken-

"Mommy, cancer is
a horrible thing....
But when I die,
Let the angels sing
I will be your new guardian
To watch and protect you...
When I get my wings,
This is what I'll do...."

"please don't cry"
As she spilled a tear
"Mommy, remember
I will always be here."
He touched her hand
As she held his tight
He watched her fade
Into the light
