Storm Maiden

One stormy night when the wind was high
I opened my window to study the darkening sky
The wind howled like wolves on a hungry chase
I breathed in deeply to welcome the cold embrace

The wind spoke in languages never heard before
In amazement I strained my ears to hear some more
“This is the night of all nights” it seemed to say
It swayed the trees in a rhythmic musical way

Nature’s raw forces were strongly felt that night
I gazed in wonder at the mesmerizing sight
Something stirred in my heart and I felt strange glee
I wanted to dance with the storm and be free

Icy wet fingers beckoned me come join their fun
They pulled and tugged at my heart ‘til it came undone
I felt part of my soul escape into the stormy song
Soft words whispered at my heart to join the throng

That was the night I first saw the Storm Maiden
My heart swelled and with numb love was laden
Her lips formed the words “ Please do be my guest”
My soul and mind joined into the storm’s crest

I danced with the lady and held her so near
But in her touch I felt she must be in fear
Though she smiled and laughed like a happy child
I understood in my heart she was part of the wild

I kissed her passionately and looked into her eyes
Tears drops fall to the ground and she softly cries
“Don’t leave me, I love you too much to depart”
But I did, though I left her my heart

Sometimes on stormy nights I hear a weak cry
And my tears start flowing and I gaze at the black sky
I had to leave her though I loved her so much
Now I’d give up anything to feel her cold touch
