Last Words for You- the silent aftermath

by Samantha lynn   Apr 19, 2005

I left you
A note on the counter,
Attached to
The photograph
Of us holding hands.

I packed
The fuzzy pink slippers
And satin nightgown
Into my bag,
Just like everything else.

You didn’t believe
When I said to look around
And realize we lived a lie;
Now it was too late.

I was driving
When you called
Asking where I had gone;
I told you to read the letter.

It was fitting,
I ended it all
In celebration of when it started,
And left like you often did.

You were silent,
Then offered an apology,
Pleading to start over and make it right;
I hung up and turned the radio on.

It was funny,
As I stared out the window
Watching the sun set before me,
The familiar tone, set for only you,
Faintly heard over the radio,
Ironically blasting our song.

The tears fell for all that was lost,
But I drove on;
For you,
For me,
For the horizon,
Beckoning me forward to a new start.
