Coffee Table. (A Love Story)

by Misstress   Apr 24, 2005

Are you free tonight?
Meet me at the café...
At 8, I have something to tell you.
Sending message…
Message sent!

“We need to talk. Yeah right.
More like we need to break up”

I woke up asking myself why I was with Janice
We hardly had anything in common like the rest.
For one, she talks about everything…yes! A chatty type
Incessantly talking what transpired her during day and night.

She talks about how she sent a pick-pocket to jail,
About how the weather was fine and she wanted to sail.
About her math teacher tried to discuss strictly their lesson.
When all she do she was daydreaming about the spring season.

She had an opinion about everything, I mean everything.
And she was brutally honest about what she’s thinking.
So much so that her observations often hurt someone’s feeling.
Even if that wasn’t her intention on what she’s doing.

I also find Janice to be restless, doing everything in details,
Always making sure that all her things were fine and hale.
While I like to take things cool and easy,
Believing everything would turn out nice eventually.

We disagreed even of the choice of music.
Don’t laugh, but I prefer jazz and techno makes me sick.
She also likes to groove to the rhythm of Britney,
While I enjoy the sound of Miles Davis and Elvis Presley.

Heck we couldn’t even agree on coffee.
I prefer mine black with 2 sugars, cream free.
She wanted hers to be flavorful and shallow,
Like she wanted frapuccino with cinnamon and marshmallow.

Anyway I arrived at the café early.
I asked the girl at the counter to pour my usual coffee.
There were only 3 of us in the café, me, the girl and a lady
It was awfully quite. “Would you mind putting some music for me?”

--I asked the girl manning the counter.
“I’m sorry sir; our sound system’s broken and will be repaired later.”
“Great…How about a newspaper, do you have one?”
“My apology, but we have none.”

--“Just great…” tapping my fingers, “well thanks anyway.”
I guess it’s going to be a long quite night.
My palms began to sweat as my frustration started to set in,
I don’t have any hanky so; I rubbed them on the thighs of my jeans.

I checked my watch, a quarter to 8 it says.
“Oh well just a few minutes to wait on this awfully quite day.”
I just was about decide to take a walk around the rear
When a cheerful greeting broke the atmosphere…

“Hey there! Mister I-look-so-serious.” It was Janice.
She walk behind me and gave me a peck on my cheeks, one a piece.
--I smiled. “God why am I smiling?”
When I am about to break up with her, on that evening.

I quickly put my sullen look and stand.
It scoured on me that I have not planned
How to break up with the news to her…
How would I do it? Would it be harsh? Or would it be fair?

“Listen…Janice. I’ve been doing some thinking lately…”
“Excuse me one second” she says as she took out a hanky,
Wipes something off my cheek and whisper
“I love you…, hmm there! Now that’s better.

She smiled with childlike pleasure, and winks her left eye
As she sited gracefully back onto her chair.
She looks so happy, accomplishing her little task…
“What was that you were saying?” she asked.

I smiled again. And it dawned on me.
I realized that it doesn’t matter if we see things differently.
Didn’t like the same kind of music or movies,
Or even drink the same kind of coffee.

It didn’t matter. She loves me. And I, her.
“Hello…?” … “I’m sorry” I said. My mind drifted for a moment there.
“I was just thinking how much I missed you…”
She laughed. “But we just saw each other yesterday, I miss you too.”

“I know. But believe me, it’s true!
I just wanted to see you…
So, “I asked,” would you like a frapuccino?”
