Solitaire

by Stef   May 9, 2005

I told you all my secrets and I gave you all my pain.
You promised to take it and help me smile again.
I trusted you in times when I couldn’t even trust myself.
I thought you’d be there for me when I had nobody else.
You told me I was the only one you really had.
And so I promised you I’d abide to your every command.
You confided in me and I took your fear away.
I coaxed you and taught you how to live for today.
You thanked me and swore you were forever in my debt.
And I took that to mean this was something you wouldn’t forget.
The closeness we shared was short lived but I grew to need it so.
When it came time for you to leave me, I didn’t want to let you go.
Our talks became so limited, our time together was solitaire.
It was complicated for me to let her in on all we’d shared.
But you told her all our secrets; you just opened up our world.
And I quickly fell away from the scene, becoming just another girl.
Another girl who never had the strength to let you know the truth.
Just a girl who fell in love, but could never tell you.
When I told you all my secrets, I gave you all my pain.
You promised to take it and help me smile…
But you just gave it back again.
