The Mariners Of My Heart

by Tom Swart   Jul 5, 2005

The mariners of my heart are restless
As they mark time upon her decks.
They long for the open sea and
Stand ready at the helm.

Life’s breath gives birth
To the swells and the currents
As they toy and play with
This vessel of memories.
They cause us to remember
The gentle motions of your love.

These sailors of my youth
Have pitched my hull
And bleached my timbers.
They have patched my sails
And now grow anxious
For the open sea.

The words “cast off all lines”
Is their cry as we break from the pier
That held us for so long
Our sails are unfurled and fill themselves
With the breezes of your memory.

They heave us over as we break
And split this ocean of tears.
The spray and the salt brings
Joy and refreshes our souls.
The sound of the wind
Sings in our rigging and makes
This old captain happy again.

Our rudder begs direction
As we sail into this new day.
We long to find the bay
Where your heart lies buoyed.
A place where we can drop our
Anchor and be with you once more.

    Hey Tom
I really liked this poem a lot because it mentions mariners and I am from Nova Scotia, and live next to the ocean. You create such beautiful images and this is my favourite poem of yours.
