Emptying the boxes

by Justin Groft   Jul 6, 2005

I empty another box...

clothes from a different fad
lists of things to do i never did
baseball cards and do hickey soos
just little things i never thought id use
i stand these memories up on end
little bits of home I've carried with me all my life
i empty another box...

a collection of tapes dust covered and sounding
a picture of my father with hair left wilting
a gold medal ribbon from a first place standing
and a simple thought of you
left dancing on my textured ceiling
i empty another box...

i could go on with this
but then id never begin to finish
its hard to pack up and go
when everything you've ever had is all you know
i guess its just me this time
I've emptied all the boxes.

Moving away, moving on... Excellent flow to the poem, strangely satisfying descriptions of material memories that seem to fit like jigsaw pieces into an identity. The unsettled sense of emptiness at the end closes the piece perfectly.

Reading this has improved my night. Cheers.
