As We Remember

by EarlyBird01   Jul 10, 2005

As I walk through the woods
Where our young days, so long ago,
Were spent
I hear the wind as it whistles thought the trees
I hear the birds sing among the leaves.
And remember.

The days when we were young,
Where our innocent fantasies gave us wings
Wings that would take us anywhere,
Like those of the winged Pegasus
We rode on him, at times…
Really whenever we wished,
We were not withheld by anything
Save our own imaginations
My Tears fall, but yet…I smile.
As I remember.

Things seem so different
As I no longer feel compelled
To run through the long grass
Nor to climb up into the trees
Yet I remember

I remember how strongly I felt
That I would surely burst…
It was much like the longing
Which you could always see in the dog’s eyes
As he stared at the meat being set upon the table for dinner
Desperately wanting to snatch it away.
Do you remember?

Nothing has really changed,
The grass is still green, the trees are still here.
We go down by the pond,
Where we can here the hoarse voices of the frogs,
And the occasional soft splash as a fish gently breaks the glass surface of its home,
Then returns to the depths of the place that it knows best.
It was long ago, but my tears are still happy
Why should I be sad?
Our kingdom of old has aged, and so have we
But we are both still here
You are still with me, my lifelong friend
And we can still remember.
