Fire\\\'s Fury

by Todd   Jul 25, 2005

I awake to distant shouting,
And jump up from my sleep.
I hear: “The house is burning down ”
And the fire alarms “beep, beep, beep...”

With 30,000 thoughts,
All running through my mind.
I realize it is a race for survival,
Then my thoughts begin to unwind.

Suddenly seven different children,
Are all running toward the door.
I took the youngest in my arms,
And ran across the floor.

I flew so fast down those stairs,
I don’t think I touched the floor.
The one objective in my head,
To get outside the door.

I opened up the door and thought,
“Just one more flight of stairs ahead ”
That’s when smoke came billowing in,
And I covered Bre-Anna’s head.

The smoke was so thick and black,
I couldn’t see or breathe.
For once in my life my thoughts,
Were not centered around me.

Running towards the door I see,
A cop come flying up the street.
My eyes were stinging really bad,
And the floor was hot from the heat.

All I had was me and Bre-Anna,
No socks or shoes on our feet.
All the littlest stones and rocks,
Sting with every step on concrete.

I met up with all eight others,
Standing on the sidewalk.
I thought to myself: “We are all here”
As we all began to talk.

Tears of joy streamed down my face,
Knowing we all made it out alive.
I got down on my knees,
And thanked God we all survived.
