Little promise

A little broken promise
is not such a big thing,
the problem is when it's combined
with a child’s little dreams

when all is said and done
at the end of the day
a child takes with them
all things you do or say

so if you go back on your word
or if you break an oath
then instead of trust and truthfulness
heartbreak and distrust is what they’ll know

if every day you tell them yes
and every day they live a no
they’ll learn to never keep their word
for a child learns as they go

if you treat their trust loosely
and not value every speck of faith
then by the time you see the damage
it will be too late

for their eyes will dull to lifelessness
shuttered, and closed, and deceived
and they’ll close their hearts, their arms, and their minds
for nothing will be what they believed it would be

so when they get that vow from you
and you’ve pledged something to that little boy or girl,
write it in stone, if that’s what it takes,
for to one little heart, that promise means the world.
