Leave that topic over there

I tried to write a poem about religion today
It didn’t work out very well, I must say.
There were contradictions all over the place.
And my message was rather hard to chase

My point I suppose is as simple as this
Don’t tell me what religion will bring me ultimate bliss
You tried to justify your words by saying the same
But then you went and listed various religions by name

You went down your list and pointed out their sales pitch flaws
And the entire time I was watching your flapping jaw
You jabbered on about how you preferred it if people just left you and your beliefs alone
When the entire time I felt like I was listening to a sales pitch about your own

Perhaps I’m just simple minded, but in my opinion
One should never openly discuss anything to do with religion
You never know whom you might rub the wrong way
No matter if your intentions were as innocent as hay

So if you please, just leave the topic where it belongs
In churches, temples, mosques, and homes
