Leaving Home

by Mat   Aug 13, 2005

It was too early to get depressed or emotional, so we kept it simple. It was quiet outside. The cows were asleep, the birds hadn't come out yet. The house on the top of the hill, which was usually full of noise, was dead quiet. Maybe everybody was as sad as us to see him leave. It was a few hugs goodbye, some hands were shaken, and tears were almost shed, but we held them back, because we wanted to keep it simple.
And with that, he walked away. The sky was blue, and he became a dark figure as he disappeared into the haze. Then there was silence. The younger members of the family began to doze off. The grandmotherly types closed their eyes in thought. I was the only one who was fully awake. I stared into the fog ahead waiting for the sound of an engine to grow fainter as it drove off into the distance. There was a deep sigh and finally, two bright shining eyes stared back at me, turned around, and began the journey down the dusty path to adulthood.

Goodbye, Josh.
