A World Of Bigotry

by Tom Watkins   Aug 25, 2005

It began with religious bigotry.
My beliefs are better than your beliefs!
People were killed for the gods they followed.
And then it became a cultural thing;
More advanced societies ruled others.
People were hated for where they were born,
Or differences in physical features.
The wealthy think they’re better than the poor
Though they could not survive without their wealth.
They are the neediest of all people.
The poor hate the wealthy for what they have.
They covet what does not belong to them.
Gays are hated for their sexual choice.
Straights are hated if they do not agree,
With each choice the gay community makes.
Gays are murdered for sexual preference.
Hated for their public celebrations.
But straights would endure the same kind of wrath,
If they were to march through San Francisco
Flying a bold banner that reads: “Straight Pride.”
People hate for political reasons,
Believing the other party is wrong.
One president is hated for Iraq,
Another is extolled for Bosnia.
Feelings on war change with each president.
Feelings on religion become bolder.
Marx, Hegel, Nietzche and Aldous Huxley,
All preached Christianity’s extinction.
Faith holds to a higher power than man.
Without it, there are no God given rights.
Communism flourishes without God.
Schools teach this poison to our children,
And as long as they do, hate will prevail.
As an infant, did you hate anyone?
At three, did you care about religion?
At five, were you politically correct?
Were you democrat or republican?
At seven, were white and black that different?
At eight, did you prefer gay or strait sex?
Did you commit any hate crimes at ten?
Prejudice is not something we’re born with.
It is the product of our programming.
Bigots saturate our society,
Targeting one group after another.
There are sexual and racial bigots,
Political and cultural bigots.
Today the world hates Christianity.
Tomorrow it will be another group.
We did not come into this world with hate.
Somebody else taught us how to do that.
Where are all the independent thinkers,
Who live to follow their own perspectives?
Don’t place your foot in another’s footprint,
Lest you fear starting a path of your own.
And if you think you’re not a follower,
Look in the mirror, and what do you see?
How many ladies have trendy tattoos?
How many gentlemen have pierced themselves?
How many hate me for bringing this up?
Human beings hate to face their demons.
If you find yourself using the word hate,
In reference to others or their beliefs,
Then you are led by your influences,
And are nothing more than a follower.
Followers improve other’s ideas.
They add to another’s philosophy.
They rarely ever think beyond the box,
And never have ideas of their own.
Will anything ever begin with you?
Or will you be the founder of nothing?
Will you be remembered as a bigot,
Or one with an objective opinion?
Are you an extension of someone else,
Or an individual with free will?
The answer to that question is revealed
When you hate others for race or color,
Or simply because of what they believe.
