Like You Never Left

by SethM   Sep 4, 2005

I watch
From the corner of my eye
I see you move slowly
Up the stairs
Out of sight

I pretend it's not there
I try to hide it
But it is there
And I can't help but show
The way I really feel

I hold you close
As the taxi comes
Taking us apart
But unable to kill the feelings
We live apart like nothing different

Calls on the phone
Wishes you'll be there
Machine answers
Informing that you've moved
The heart breaks again

No contact available
No number left
Soul breaks
I thought she was,
But she's not anymore.'

Life seems pointless
I contemplate treason
Fear of moving on
A knock at the door
I slowly lower the gun

it's you!'
We kiss and embrace
You look inside
You see the gun on the counter
You start to cry

We hug again
You slowly back away
what's going on?!'
You demand
I told you I wouldn't forget.'

I move in closer
it's been five years,
You moved away.'
I smile
but now you're back.'

She smiles,
Pulls an engagement ring from her pocket and says;
I would never forget.
My answer was and is... Yes.'

...46 years later...

I watch
As they slowly lower a casket
It's still there
The darkness cannot take it away
I toss my rose.
