This Time Eternal

by Anna   Sep 17, 2005

We stood still, a blasphemous act in the center of perpetual movement.
But as we requested, time acquiesed.
Slowed down into a pulsing beat;
slower, slower, slower yet
Coming to a dead stop, we realized that we were alone and that nothing else mattered.

The harshness of our breath took us into the dark
and threatened to hold us there
Plunging, searching, grasping.
We had everything we ever wanted, but nothing we needed
A child's dream, but it came to a halt all too soon

.Nothing they said could ever stop us.
They told us we were living in denial, a maddening disease.
One that couldn't be cured.
Not by any means.

We weren't willing to give up hope.
Not yet. Not ever. We were eternal.
We never swayed, we never moved, we wouldn't. We couldn't.
Not even if the gods themselves asked us to.

In the midst of the insanity, our greatest fear embodied itself;
time sped up to show us all that we had missed.
Our bitter elegies of regret simply echoed and faded to nothing.
Our thoughts, our dreams, our tears;
all swept away as if they were nothing.
The only thing that still remained was our fear.
We remained. This time eternal.
