Eulogy of a Hero

by Timothy Bledsoe   Sep 24, 2005

I did not know him very well
When the angels bore him away
But I still remember him
Even to this very day

I was too young to understand why
But I knew all that I needed know
Nobody wanted him to die
But to heaven he needed to go

He would take my brother
And he would take me
He would sing songs to us
Each sitting on one knee

He was my sister's favorite
She was always close to him
He always watched over her
And she looked up to him

He never graduated high school
Though in shame he did not hide
He worked a good, honest man
Until the day that he died

He was always a patriot
And he served this great country
He was an honorable soldier
Serving in the navy

He was always quick to help
Someone who was in need
He gave his aid freely
None ever had to plead

He was seen as a just man
Never lacking in virtue
He served the state he lived in
And he always served true

He was not a man of great stature
Or one of wealth and grace
But the one thing I always saw
Was a smile on his face

Him I will always remember
Until the last breath I draw
He was my father's father
He was my grandpa

Incredible dedication to one so loved. Great job. This poem reminds me of my dad. He is 78. Ran away at 14, got a fake birth certificate and joined the Navy. Your grandfather sounds like a true man of honor. Well done.
