Spirit and the Flesh

by Daniel Jimenez   Oct 21, 2005

There are two parts to every man
the Spirit and the flesh.
the Spirit seeks the face of God
and the flesh lusts for the flesh.

And these two sides are advisaries
every moment they battle great -
fighting over the soul of man,
yearning for the souls final fate.

The Spirit yearns for the soul to be
in the presence of God at all costs,
yet the flesh desires for the soul to perish
and be forever lost.

Woe is me this wretched man of men
who can not choose a side!
For every day I choose death and sin;
in the flesh my soul abides!

Yet then my wits are awakened
and I see the death at hand
and through repentance I reject the flesh
and in the Spirit I choose to stand.

And in the Spirit I do rejoice
with my soul warmed by His pure light.
But once again the flesh takes heed
and I backslide without a fight.

Back and forth my heart goes
from glory to shame and back again.
When the trumpet sounds at last
where will be my souls end?

Will it come when I am repented
and walking in His light once more?
Or will it be when I am feasting on the flesh
and my faith is dead on the floor?

This tug of war lays within me.
Great is the battle inside my heart!
Spirit overcomes flesh -flesh overcomes Spirit!
It's tearing my body apart.

A very good poem, very descriptive of the battle we face as christians. Sometimes it feels so BAD but there is always HOPE. When you feel strong ask God to never let go of you whatever happens in the future, tell Him what you REALLY want is how you feel right then and TRUST Him to do it. HE WILL.
