The answer

by libby   Nov 14, 2005

I feel the need to surround
myself with words.
I want to clothe myself
in them, tattoo them on
my face, my hands, my stomach,
perfect prose peppered with
adjectives, utilizing alliteration and
metaphor, my favorite devices.
Poetry emotes so much
better than I ever could.
For as long as I
can remember, I have harbored a
strange distrust for
things. They feel awkward and
unnatural. We worry too much over
this one and that one,
which gift to give rather than
how to say
I love you.
Eager for the distraction, we
turn away from words.
This, I think, is why I write.
If my ideal world -
composed solely of words -
cannot be attained, I can
at least create more
for this world.
