Equation

He stares at the pictures of them on the wall
And watches it slowly fall apart
She thinks of the times when they had it all
And how he broke her heart

He reads the notes signed with a kiss
And whispers the words I love you
She cries herself to sleep at night
And lying, she says I know you do

He wears her like a trophy on his sleeve
And a patch on his Boy Scout sash
She tells herself she's too naive
And yet her heart still turns to ash

He doesn't understand this pain she feels
And he'll probably never try
She pushes away what's right and real
And she can't explain why

He goes to bed without her on his mind
And thinks of the other girls instead
She sleeps and dreams, wondering what she'll find
And he's the one running through her head

He wonders why it's ending this way
And why it's going to sh.t
She tries to find the words he can't say
And she can't deal with it

He tells her that it has to end
And he's sorry for hurting her
She cringes when he says they'll remain friends
And remembers what they were

He has tears in his eyes and goes to bed
And hopes for a brand new day
She does the math in her head
And wonders why good things won't stay

Looking back, she found the perfection equation
To why they fell apart under this persuasion
It was always him or her, never them or they
Trembling with this knowledge, she doesn't know what to say

He caught her eye in the hallway
And turned around when she passed
She didn't bother to turn away
And finally accepts the reasons of why it didn't last

He was all right
And she was okay
She was his night
And he was her day

But knowing that nothing could ever happen again
They understand the meaning of "just friends"
