Future Callings

by Sherry Lynn   Nov 30, 2005

My head on your chest
The role has reversed
For it was I
That once held you

A beating heart
Strong in my ear
It is a sound
That I love to hear

Every breath you take
Brings joy to my heart
Just knowing that you are here
Safe where you belong

Dreading the day
That you move away
Knowing that soon
I will no longer be with you

Four more years
Is all I have
Then you will depart
To give all you can

The military you say
Is where your heart belongs
Anxiously waiting
For that chance to prove others wrong

What will I do
A life without you
Leaves me feeling lost
And quiet confused

The marines is your goal
Even though it will take you from home
Serving is your calling
Though I am left bawling

As a mother I am proud
That you want to serve
As a mother I am scared
That you will never return

Sherry, i really feel this poem. i have only one child and he is nine. and the time is going too quickly. i only have 9 years left before he branches out and explores life on his own. that may seem like a long time, but if it goes as quickly as the last nine have gone it doesnt seem like it. i cherish him every day.
