Lady of the Night II - Of Past and Present

by Brad Champagne   Dec 6, 2005

//Sequel to "Lady of the Night"

As I awoke, the sun streamed through the curtains on my face,
And I turned to find my Lady there.
Sweet, warm, and gentle lay she now in such a perfect sleep
I stirred not for fear I'd break the spell.

An unknown time had passed in peace; she woke, and we embraced.
My fingers slipped through her golden hair
As I gazed on her wondrous beauty with love so deep
That the words of man would fail to tell.

"Good day, my love," she whispered as from the bed I arose.
Her silky tone brought tears to my eyes.
"What's wrong?" she pleas at my side as with smile I did reply,
"Your beauty would make the angels weep."

We both did dress to meet the day, the sun through windows shows
That they are not but simple disguise.
My Lady and I did play the rulers they dignify,
But our royalty is but skin-deep.

Secretly we wished return to the moor on which we met,
There to live the simple, honest life,
Duty and honor retained us in that place of power,
Our dream did struggle to take its flight.

Hope was kept in heart and mind, what little that we would let
Without it causing much pain and strife.
So there we did sit at that hour
Recalling the strange details of that foggy, fateful night.

From our daydream we were shook by announcement of a page
From the western edge of our great land.
My Queen did quickly motion for his presence to be shown,
Whilst our worst fears crept into our minds.

When at last he made his journey it was easy to gage
In what situation we did stand.
I waved formalities all aside and asked his news be known.
He whispered, "The dragon's sleep unwinds."

Ours eyes did meet, and fear shot between in understanding
What was to be done, and whom would go.
Sliding from my throne, dismissing the guest, I left the court
And strode to don my plate and sword.

The Lady appeared at my side to secure the banding,
And her love, faith, to devotion show.
We knew how stupid with a dragon it is to cavort,
My duty, honor, I cannot ward.

The rest of this tale will have to hold for some days to come,
Though the rest in time will be revealed.
With that once more adieu I bid to this mausoleum
In which this history has been sealed.
