A Rose For My Sweet Baby

"I'm going to be late" he thought
As he sprinted down the street
The only thing you could hear that night
Was the tapping of his feet

He had a date that night
Set for a little after eight
If he didn't get there soon
He was sure that he'd be late

He couldn't wait to hold her
And to to tell her how much he cared
The only thing that kept him running
Was the hopes that she'd still be there

He decided to talk a short cut
To try to save some time
Down a dark and damp ally way
Where the thief would commit a crime

A gunshot in the distance
And then a terrifying scream
One day people would cry about this
And wish it was just a dream

He was killed that night
While attempting to see his love
Now he could only see her
From an angels view up above

When she finally found out
She couldn't find the right words to say
She wanted to be with him so bad
But she knew that she would someday

She found something in his pocket
It was a rose along with a note
Tears filled up her eyes
As she read the last words he ever wrote

It said "This rose is for you my sweet baby,
I hope you will understand
Traffic was horrible today
And all the roads were jammed

I love you more than anything
It's clear for me to see
And maybe now that you know this
I can ask you to marry me"

He watched her as she read it
From the clouds way up above
And he knew that at that moment
He would always have her love

He felt incredibly stupid
For worrying about being late
Maybe if he would've taken the long way
Being with her would be his fate

But it didn't work out that way
And the grief in her heart would soon enclose
The only thing she would have left of him
Was that single lonely rose...
