All I could afford on Valentines Day

by Chelsey   Feb 11, 2006

I’ve watched you hurt for to long mama
On this lonely Valentines Day
Nothing but tears from you
Ever since daddy passed away

He fought so mighty hard
In that long bloody war
You must know he now lives a better life
Daddy suffers no more

I know all the money was lost
You were merely a house wife
The money stopped flowing to our house
The day daddy lost his life

Our beautiful mansion we once called “home”
Is now knocked down giving us no place else
We now live in this dirty shack
With not one person offering help

I tried making this day special
Although you told me to shut up when I wanted to sing
I’m just trying to make you smile mommy
I can’t be like dad and buy you a ring

So I did my best mama
All that I could afford
Was a sign that said “I love you”
Made out of a 5x5 cardboard

I picked some dandelions for you
They were in that muddy field
I gave them to you with the slightest faith
Hoping your heart would heal

Found a dollar on the streets today
Bought you a burger with that money
This is a special day I made for you
Don’t even worry about me

Mom that’s all I could afford today
Please tell me I got you out of the blues
Could you please just smile for me
Although I’ll never fill daddy’s shoes
