Keep my heart company

by Lauren G.   Mar 1, 2006

I am leaving you with the image of....
Taillights fading in the distance
Driving down your unchanged street
Altered by melancholy and disappointment
As the ashes fall from my comforting cigarette
My stomach knots with dejection
And I feel powerfully compelled to turn around
The voice in my head says \"You stupid fool,
You heart is bleeding and you are walking away from the only one who can heal it.\"
I want desperately to take you in my arms
And whisper all the things I keep silent
To make you feel the way no one else has
To tell you you are everything I have
Been searching for, but did not know it
And given time, our mutual attraction
To each other\'s mysterious, dark allure
Could transform itself into something beautiful
But instead I watch the lines on the road
As the distance between us lengthens
And instead I direct my thoughts elsewhere
Eyes focused on streetlights, stop signs
But I cannot stop my throat from tightening, bewildered
Because traces of your lips still remain on mine
I hope your heart is breaking too,
So it will keep mine company
And I curse this winter season, this cold wind
That reminds me how you let me begin falling for you
And the farther I get from this town
The harder I try to overlook the fact that
Your smell still lingers on my skin
The more I focus on disregarding your sexy smile.
The more I try to forget the words you said
The ones that touched me in all the right places
I loved the time we spent together but,
I hate that we are perfect for each other
why cant you be less fascinating, less alluring
Goodbye would have been so much easier then
I stare out the window and I cannot hide
From you, from your reflection
And I can already tell your fingerprints
Will be here for a while
Why have you made such an impression on me?
The songs I hear, the places I pass
They contain pieces of you
And faster I flee, the farther I run
The more your memories seem to follow me
One day soon I will return to this place
And hope that everything will have
Been unaffected, remaining the same in my absence
And I will drive down your same unchanged street
And my heart will feel like exploding
And the sky will look blue again
You will kiss me and it will seem like
I was holding your hand just yesterday
Then, we can continue what we have begun
But for now I will dream of you and
Leave you with the key to my heart
So you always have a place to stay.
