Gift from Above

You gently stroked
my small head
sang to me
got me ready for bed

helped me bathe
made me smile
stopped my screaming
if just for a while

found me my bear
placed him in my arms
said "I love you Ruthie"
and kept me from harm

you held out a hand
and helped me to walk
taught me my words
cause I was ready to talk

we always danced
as the sky cried
skipped and twirled
as the light died

when daddy got sick
you were so strong
still sung me to sleep
when everything was wrong

I was so selfish
thought I was alone
daddy had left me
and my heart on our own

You'd known him more
than I ever would
yet u did something
that I never could

a young girl of twelve
you stood by our mother
always were patient
when we fought with each other

mum used to yell
and you'd be right there
to hold me tight
and stroke my hair

you kept us together
you kept me strong
cause you never strayed
into the wrong

you remembered
all daddy said
to trust in our God
say our prayers next to bed

to read from his word
a little each day
and no matter what happens
god has a way

so my dear sister
today is the day
that I'm not ashamed
to say what I say

that you are my light
my heartbeat, my star
after my Jesus
you don't measure far

heart of my heart
gift from above
soul of my soul
it's you that I love

~I wrote this poem for my sister. apart from my god she's the only reason I didn't give up on life. she's always been there and soon she's moving out to go to uni so... I wrote this to say that I haven't been strong like she has but I'm not going to be selfish anymore. It's time for her to take up her dreams.....
