I Still Love You

by Poetvoices   Mar 16, 2006

She sees him again
like every other night this week,
but of this to her family
this time, she won't speak.

They all think she's crazy,
but she knows he's there.
She can feel him all around.
He runs his fingers through her hair.

The power of his gaze
sits upon her face.
She wants him to hold her again,
or come back to what she feels is his place.

They don't know the guilt she feels
that sobered her that second.
Watching him leave the world behind
was never her intent.

She had been out with some friends
when one said, "Look what I have here!"
She shouldn't have let temptation in.
She shouldn't have had ONE beer.

Four was too much and she couldn't drive,
but she tried hard anyway.
She hadn't woken up thinking
about what would happen that day.

Everything seemed to be running smoothly
until she swerved to the sidewalk.
They had hit an innocent man.
No one made an attempt to talk.

The very first thing she thought to do
was get out of the dented car.
She left her baffled friends behind,
running pretty far.

She didn't see the guy anywhere.
He made no effort to appear.
"Where are you?" she shouted frantically.
"Look--over... here..."

The man's faint breaths frightened her.
This could be his end.
"Are you okay?" she asked,
then she realized it was her boyfriend.

"Oh my God!" she screamed
reaching for her cell.
"Hurry! Get here now!" she ended with,
"He's not doing too well!"

"There's not much hope," the EMT said
looking in her eyes.
"I'll never forgive myself," she said aloud,
"if my boyfriend dies!"

She watched his fragile body
being lifted by the crew.
As they passed, their dark eyes met.
He said softly, "Baby, I still love you."

When she heard the news about his death,
she couldn't even cry,
but she sat alone for days and days.
All she did was try.

She knows his promise was just that,
because he shows her every day
with a little peck on the cheek
or a hug in his own way.
