Too late to say goodbye....

by *fading*away*   May 20, 2006

Confined to the four bleak walls
of the neighborhood hospital
Her heart hammers within her chest
She is alone, all alone, confined
Prisoned in this life
Her mama is dying right before her eyes
And yet her thoughts wander,
To keep the pain at bay

She doesn't want to cry
Not then, not when her mom is dying
She can feel her mama's breath,
Slowing almost inaudible now
"No,"she whispers softly,
But she knows it's useless
She feels a thousand years older
Wiser than any book she had ever read
Right then everything flashes before her eyes
Those memories with her mom
When times were better,
Long before her mom got cancer
Just then her mother closed her eyes
For the last and final time
It was too late to hug her and feel her warmth return back
Too late to feel her kiss upon her cheek
Too late to say an I love you
And she knew that too

She closes her eyes
And searches within herself
The love she had lost
She finds it is still there
But it just feels so unreal
To feel the love
Without a reassuring hug
Then the tears that had been in her heart
Flow freely onto the bedsheets
She touches her mother's cheek
Feels nothing but coldness
Her heart shatters
Knowing nothing would ever be the same again

The hospital felt like a prison
The walls taunting, mocking at her
She wanted her mother back,
But she was gone
She wanted her love back,
But that had disappeared
She wanted to laugh again
But how could she
When the world had cast her away
Leving her an orphan in this world
Full of hatred and bloodshed
