Are you up?

by Chelsey   Aug 5, 2006

Just a little past midnight, you gave me a scare
You text “Chels are you up?” there went my flare
I text you a “yes maim, are you ok?”
A couple minutes, no reply, I had nothing to say

I stepped on the porch and turned on the light
Dialed your number not thinking it was the middle of the night
I remembered earlier you said your brother was threatening you
It went straight to your voicemail, I knew what to do

“I got your text hun, I’m just checking in”
I wanted to let a tear roll down to my chin
Why would she text me so very late?
She knows I get nervous and can’t concentrate

A little message sent later “just ex-boyfriend drama”
I wanted to say “that’s it? You put me through head trauma”
But as I scrolled down a smile peeked through
You said, “Just a little issue I know you can help me pull through”

It made me realize, how much you confide in me
Even if you did keep me up till quarter of three
I just want you to know I’ll always be awake
I’ll always be up if something gives you a shake

Whether it be something little or big you can call
I’d drive over and get you; I’d help you through it all
Just know I’m always up, or at least sleeping by my phone
In case you desperately need me, I’ll never leave you on your own

If something were wrong we’d be running over
With some chocolate and tulips
And I know if I ever needed you that late
I can always text you a “Sam are you up?”

Friendship. What a wonderful thing. Cherish it. Friends will always be there and poems like this acknowledging them are so important. Beautifully done.
