The List

by Steven Odenbreit   Aug 7, 2006

I have a list of people I know,
All written in a book,
And at times like these,
I go and take a look,
That is when I realize,
These names are all a part,
Not of the book they're written in,
But a part of my heart,
For each name stands for someone,
Who crossed my path sometime,
And in that meeting they've become,
The rhythm to each rhyme.

Well it may seem crazy,
For me to make this claim,
But i feel I'm composed,
Of each remembered name,
And while you may not be aware,
Of any special link,
Just meeting you has changed my life,
More than you may think,
For I am but a total,
Of all the people I have met,
You for one are one of those,
I'd rather not forget.

And though I have known you,
Not many years but few,
In some way you've had a part,
In shaping things that I do,
And every time I think about it,
I realize anew,
The best gift life can offer,
Is meeting people like you.

Kim I know sometimes,
When I look into those eyes,
That your smile is not authentic,
But more of a disguise,
I know in the past you've been hurt,
More times than just a few,
And all I want to do,
Is find some way to comfort you.

So whenever life throws you a curve ball,
And you don't know what to do,
Just remember there are people like me,
Ready to give their lives for you.
