The blood they've bled

by Tom   Nov 9, 2006

Wounded by disputes for years
The 'red man' struggled to preserve land through pride and tears
But the harder they persisted
They were met with resistance
By men who didn't have their best interests
When they drafted their territorial divisions
And drove them out by counterfeit provisions
Upheld by adamant decisions
How many treaties have the 'white man' kept? None*
How many treaties have the 'red man' broken? None*
A part of their history has been stolen
But it can never be reclaimed
Something that apologies or handshakes cannot compensate
Instead of being ashamed of our negligence
We spread more ignorance without missing a step
We all bleed the same blood
Our open wounds still hurt
We all walk the same earth
But because of their skin and heritage
They don't deserve the same privileges?
After all, they built the first villages
We named our country after them
We should change its name to: 'KKKanada'
Inspired by a new religion
Its colour is green; and its name is money
Settlers arrived from overseas
And brought with them terrible diseases
Wrapped up in 'gifts' and left them under Christmas trees
And by new years they'd succumb to these miseries
Then add salt to the wound
Deliberately breaching every truce
Introduce gambling and alcohol
Exposed vulnerabilities advanced their curtain call
They're legacy deteriorated through the decades
Phoney promises and manipulation they became placated
Constantly pulling straws and drawing spades
Spiritual deviation led to sedation
Someone needs to speak their voice
Before you're left without a choice
Because each foot standing still is a taking a step behind
How much will be surrendered before the next one dies?
No one knows what tomorrow will bring
There's no triumph till the 'red man' sings

*Both lines appeared in a Rage Against The Machine video.
