For the Love of the Game

When I step on that court its time to get started,
I don't play this game half, I play whole hearted.
We do our cheer and start our warm ups,
Passing, Shooting, Dribbling and Lay ups.

Then the horn blows and its time to begin,
This one's in the bag for sure we're gonna win.
The announce the starters from each side,
This game isn't just a game ita's about school pride.

We huddle up and do a cheer,
Its game time, ita's finally here.
The ref throws the ball and both girls jump with all their might,
We won the tip, we're gonna win tonight.

Things started out good, added points to the board,
I felt like Michael through the air I soared.
But then I got tired and my shots weren't falling,
So I just held the ball and others names I started calling.

My coach pulled me out because I wasn't doing my role,
I was standing out there like a lazy 5'7 pole.
My head started to fall because I couldn't do things right,
Then I started to question would we win tonight?

That day I learned if you want to be great,
Learn to shake this off before it's too late.
Yeah I had some turnovers and some missed shots,
But instead of getting down I tried shooting from different spots.

You see basketball is a team sport,
If you play as a team you can win even if your teams short.
What really matters is the size of your team's heart,
That's something I learned from the very start.

It wasn't just me out there on the court,
I had 4 other players that I needed to build and give support.
Even something as small as good job or a little high five,
Makes a team come back alive.

It was fourth quarter and we were down my two,
I kept my cool and thought about what we should do.
They passed me the ball and I knew the win was mine,
I drove to the hole, got fouled, and went to the line.

So we lined up for the free throws and the ref passed me the ball,
Make two shots is what I had to do that's all.
I took a deep breath and sank the first shot,
The free throw line is my favorite spot.

One Shot is what would decide the game,
Would I be a loser or would they remember my name.
My hands shaking and my knees about to give in,
The ref gave me the ball, I wanted so bad to win.

I said a little prayer and released the shot,
I knew it was in I had hit the spot.
The crowd yelled and my team all gathered around,
The sound of that swish was the best sound.

I don't play the game only for me,
I play for the other 4 on the court you see.
That night I think I matured some,
I was excited for the next games to come.

I'm thankful for my talents and the heart I've been given,
And the life that I've been liven.
I don't play to just cause or for the fame,
I simply play for the love of the game.
